EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph by Karl Joseph Brodtmann, published in Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals in 1836, showcases an enchanting collection of bat heads. The image includes representatives of various bat species, each displaying unique features that distinguish them from one another. At the center, the Great Fruit-eating Bat (Artibeus lituratus) can be seen with its large, round ears and small, sharp teeth, well-suited for its frugivorous diet. To its left, the Pallass Long-tongued Bat (Glossophaga soricina) is depicted with its elongated, curled tongue, an adaptation for extracting nectar from flowers. The Leafnose Bat (Phyllostomus hastatus) is easily recognized by its distinctive leaf-shaped nose leaf, which helps it detect prey by echolocation. The Vampire Bat (Desmodus rotundus) is shown with its sharp, pointed teeth and elongated, wing membranes, features that enable it to cling to walls and feed on the blood of other animals. The Striped Hairy-nosed Bat (Mimon crenulatum) is characterized by its long, striped snout and furry body, while the Lesser False Vampire Bat (Megaderma spasma) has a flat face and a wing membrane that extends between its legs. The Yellow-winged Bat (Sturnira lilium) is identified by its bright yellow wing membranes and pointed snout. This intricately detailed print is a testament to the natural history illustration of the 19th century, providing an accurate and captivating representation of these fascinating creatures. Each bat head in this collection showcases the remarkable diversity and adaptability of the bat family, making this image a must-have for any natural history enthusiast or art collector.
