EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Natterer's Bat, Myotis nattereri, also known as the Reddish Grey Bat or Vespertilio nattereri. The image is taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library, published in Edinburgh in 1836. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of James Stewart and expertly engraved by Lizars. The Natterer's Bat is a small mammal belonging to the Vespertilionidae family, native to Europe, North Africa, and western and central Asia. With a wingspan of around 22 centimeters, this bat is characterized by its reddish-grey fur, which is particularly noticeable on its back. Its forelimbs are long and slender, perfect for flying, and its ears are relatively large and rounded. The Natterer's Bat is an insectivore, feeding primarily on moths, beetles, flies, and other flying insects. It is an agile and nimble creature, able to fly at high speeds and navigate through complex environments with ease. During the day, it roosts in small colonies in caves, mines, or buildings. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the intricate details of the Natterer's Bat but also highlights the exceptional craftsmanship of the illustrator and engraver. It is a testament to the natural history artistry of the 19th century and a reminder of the importance of preserving and appreciating the natural world.
