Baudot de Noyelles-Wion, Seigneur du Catheux (d. 1461): A Nobleman of the 15th Century, as Depicted in Loredan Larchey's Ancient Equestrian Armorials This striking chromolithograph portrays Baudot de Noyelles-Wion, Seigneur du Catheux, a nobleman of the 15th century, as he appeared in Loredan Larchey's Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th Century. The image is taken from an illustrated manuscript (number 4790) housed in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal in Paris. Baudot de Noyelles-Wion is depicted in full armor, proudly displaying the insignia of his rank and lineage. His helmet, adorned with a crest featuring a griffin, sits atop his head, while a flowing mantle, emblazoned with the arms of the House of Noyelles-Wion, drapes over his shoulders. The nobleman holds a lance in his right hand, its tip capped with the fleur-de-lis, a symbol of the French monarchy. In his left hand, he clutches a shield, which bears the distinctive arms of the Order of the Golden Fleece, an emblem of high distinction and honor. The intricate details of Baudot's armor and attire reflect the advanced metallurgy and craftsmanship of the late Middle Ages. The vibrant colors and bold lines of the chromolithograph bring the image to life, transporting us back to a time when chivalry, honor, and the pursuit of noble ideals were the guiding principles of society. As a member of the nobility, Baudot de Noyelles-Wion would have been expected to uphold the values and codes of conduct associated with his rank. He would have been an active participant in tournaments, hunts, and other courtly pursuits, as well as a patron of the arts, literature, and learning. The image of Baudot in this ancient equestrian armorial serves as a testament to the grandeur and splendor of the medieval world, a time when the lives of noblemen like him were inextricably linked to the history and culture of Europe.
