EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving, taken from Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases a vibrant underwater scene teeming with various marine life. At the center, a Barrel Bubble Snail (Acteon tormatilis) is depicted with its spiraled shell and long, curved proboscis, surrounded by a beadlet anemone (Actinia equina) with its tentacles outstretched. A Yellow-barred Long-horn (Nemophora degeerella) can be seen gracefully gliding through the water, while a Brown Hawker (Aeshna grandis) rests on a nearby rock. In the background, an Acteon Austral (actinie de Ste. Helene) anemone displays its red and white striped tentacles, and an Adele Geerelle (Nemophora geerella) long-horn snail clings to a rock. The intricate details of each creature are beautifully rendered, with the artist's skillful use of color and shading bringing the image to life. The engraving is a testament to the natural history illustration techniques of the 19th century, providing a fascinating glimpse into the marine world of over 180 years ago. The meticulous attention to detail and the artist's ability to capture the unique characteristics of each species make this print a valuable addition to any natural history or marine-themed collection.
