Beating the bounds of the Tower of London 1906

Beating the bounds is still carried out in the Tower of London today every three years on Ascension Day. One of Londons oddest traditions, dating back to medieval times a group of people ( beating party ), made up of clergy and schoolchildren born or residing in the square mile are brought together and provided with long willow wands. They walk around the edges of the parish, beating boundary markers with long sticks, and praying for protection of the land. Date: circa 1906

EDITORS COMMENTS
Beating the Bounds of the Tower of London, 1906: An Edwardian Tradition Unfolds In this evocative photograph from the early 1900s, we witness an intriguing scene unfolding at the historic Tower of London. The quirky custom of 'Beating the Bounds' is being carried out, a time-honored tradition that continues to be practiced every three years on Ascension Day. The Tower of London, an iconic symbol of London's rich history, serves as the backdrop for this unique ceremony. Dating back to medieval times, the tradition involves a 'beating party' made up of local clergy and schoolchildren born or residing within the ancient square mile. The group is brought together, and each member is provided with long willow wands to mark the boundaries of their parish. As they walk around the edges of the parish, the group beats boundary markers with their long sticks while praying for the protection of the land. The tradition is steeped in history and symbolizes the community's connection to its past, as well as its commitment to preserving it for future generations. The children, dressed in their Sunday best, appear focused and determined as they take part in this ancient ritual. The Yeomen Warders, or 'Beefeaters,' who are the ceremonial guardians of the Tower, can be seen in the background, adding an air of authenticity to the scene. This photograph, taken circa 1906, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when such traditions held great significance in the daily lives of Londoners. The image is a testament to the enduring power of customs and the importance of preserving the rich tapestry of England's history.
