EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Black Hairstreak Butterfly, Satyrium pruni, resting gracefully on oak leaves. The intricate detail of the image, drawn and etched by Jacob L. Admiral, showcases the butterfly's distinctive black wings adorned with white spots and the vibrant orange and black markings on its body. The oak leaves, delicately rendered in green, provide a natural backdrop for the butterfly's elegant pose. First published in "Naauwkeurige Waarneemingen omtrent de veranderingen van veele Insekten" (Accurate Descriptions of the Metamorphoses of Insects) by J. Sluyter in Amsterdam in 1774, this print is part of the second edition which included an additional eight plates. The work was meticulously produced, reflecting the scientific curiosity and artistic skill of the time. The Black Hairstreak Butterfly undergoes a fascinating metamorphosis, transforming from a caterpillar (duikertje in Dutch) to a pupa, and finally to an adult butterfly. The larva, with its green body and distinctive black head, can be seen in some of the earlier plates in the series. The Black Hairstreak is a European species, and its preference for oak trees makes it an important part of the oak ecosystem. This beautiful and historical print not only serves as a testament to the natural world's intricacy and beauty but also to the artistic and scientific achievements of the 18th century.
