EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving is taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder, or Picture Book for Children, published in Weimar in 1792. Bertuch, a renowned German publisher and man of arts, is celebrated for his 12-volume encyclopedia for children, which featured over 1,200 engraved plates on various subjects, including natural history. The image showcases three distinct marine mammals: a Bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus, 1), a Short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis, 2), and a Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena, 3). The Bowhead whale, the largest of the three, is depicted with its massive body and distinctive square-shaped head. The Short-beaked common dolphin, with its slender body and curved dorsal fin, is shown leaping out of the water, while the Porpoise, with its rounded body and small dorsal fin, is seen swimming near the surface. Bowhead whales are known for their thick layer of blubber, which helps them survive in the cold Arctic waters. They are also famous for their long lifespan, with some individuals living for over 200 years. Short-beaked common dolphins are social animals that live in large groups and are known for their acrobatic displays, while Porpoises are more solitary creatures that prefer shallow coastal waters. This enchanting illustration not only provides a glimpse into the natural world of the late 18th century but also showcases the exceptional artistry and attention to detail that characterized Bertuch's work. It remains a testament to the enduring fascination with marine life and the importance of preserving and sharing knowledge with future generations.
