EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts a Cabbage Worm (Pieris rapae) and a Longhorn Beetle (Rutpela maculata) interacting on a flower. The image is taken from the second edition of "Naauwkeurige Waarneemingen omtrent de veranderingen van veele Insekten" (Accurate Descriptions of the Metamorphoses of Insects), published by J. Sluyter in Amsterdam in 1774. The original edition contained 25 plates, but for this second edition, additional eight plates were added. The Cabbage Worm, also known as the Cabbage White Butterfly, is a common pest that feeds on the leaves of various plants in the Brassicaceae family. The worm is shown here in its caterpillar stage, with distinctive black, white, and yellow stripes. The Longhorn Beetle, specifically the Rutpela maculata, is a large beetle with distinctive long antennae, which give it its name. The beetle is shown here in its adult form, with intricately patterned wings and elongated antennae. The engraving was drawn and etched by Jacob L. Admiral and beautifully hand-colored. The meticulous attention to detail in the illustration allows for a close examination of the anatomy and features of both the Cabbage Worm and the Longhorn Beetle. This engraving is an excellent example of the high-quality natural history illustrations produced during the 18th century.
