EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "A Delightful Duo: Chicory and Peppermint from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), Weimar, 1802" 2.. This handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1802, showcases two fascinating plants: Chicory (Cichorium intybus, 1) and Peppermint (Mentha piperita, 2). The image on the left presents Chicory, a herbaceous perennial plant with a distinctive blue-purple flower. Its edible roots, which are often roasted and ground into a coffee substitute, are shown in the foreground. Chicory is native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa, and its bitter taste makes it an intriguing addition to salads and as a vegetable. On the right, Peppermint, a perennial herb, is depicted with its characteristic purple-pink flowers and heart-shaped leaves. This aromatic plant is a hybrid of Water Mint and Spearmint, and its leaves are used to produce the popular spice and flavoring agent, peppermint oil. The plant's cooling and refreshing properties have made it a popular choice for various culinary, medicinal, and aromatic applications. This botanical illustration, with its intricate details and vibrant colors, is an excellent example of the high-quality engravings found in educational materials of the time. The Picture Book for Children, published by Friedrich Johann Bertuch, was an encyclopedia designed to introduce young learners to the natural world and expand their knowledge through beautiful and engaging visuals.
