EDITORS COMMENTS
A Misunderstood Medical Visit Date: 20th Century This charming comic postcard from the 20th century captures the essence of misunderstandings that can occur between husbands and wives, even during a seemingly routine doctor's visit. The image shows a doctor in a formal attire, carrying a medical bag, entering a bedroom where a man lies in bed, looking rather worried. His wife, standing beside the bed, wears an apron and a pinafore, holding a pint glass with a confused expression on her face. The doctor, with a reassuring smile, explains to the patient that he will be prescribing a tonic for his ailment. The wife, however, overhears the word "tonic" and jumps to a completely different conclusion. She assumes that her husband's doctor has recommended a drink to help him recover, and quickly fetches a bottle from the cupboard. The doctor, now amused, tries to clarify the situation, but the wife, already pouring a drink, insists that her husband needs a "proper tonic" to get better. The doctor, unable to contain his laughter, shakes his head and leaves the room, leaving the husband and wife with their misconception. This humorous postcard, created by renowned British illustrator Donald McGill, is a testament to the power of misunderstandings and the importance of clear communication in relationships. The double entendre in the word "tonic" adds an extra layer of fun and humor to this light-hearted depiction of everyday life.
