This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Common Box Turtle, Terrapene carolina, also known as the Eastern Box Turtle or the Common Box Tortoise, and the European Closed Box Tortoise, Testudo clausa when referring to its close relative. The engraving is based on an illustration by the renowned British naturalist and surgeon, Dr. George Shaw, from his comprehensive work "General Zoology, Amphibia," published in London in 1801. The Common Box Turtle is native to the eastern United States and parts of Central America. They are easily identified by their distinctive hinged plastron, which allows them to retract their limbs into their shell for protection. The upper parts of their shell are typically brown or olive, while the lower parts are yellowish. Their limbs are covered in small, keeled scales, and they have a distinctively red or orange head and limbs. Box turtles are omnivorous, feeding on a wide variety of plants and animals, including fruits, vegetables, insects, and small vertebrates. They are known to live for several decades, making them a valuable component of their ecosystems.
