EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving, created by Annedouche after an illustration by Werner for Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris in 1849, showcases two endangered and vulnerable species: the Mountain Zebra (Equus zebra) and the Malayan Tapir (Tapirus indicus). The Mountain Zebra, also known as the Cape Mountain Zebra or the Eastern Mountain Zebra, is a vulnerable species native to South Africa. With distinctive white stripes on a dark background, this zebra is adapted to mountainous terrain and can be found in small herds. However, their population has been decimated due to habitat loss, poaching, and competition with livestock. The Malayan Tapir, also known as the Asian Elephant-sized Tapir, is an endangered species native to the rainforests of Malaysia and Indonesia. This large, elusive mammal has a unique, humpbacked appearance and a distinctive, prehensile snout. Malayan Tapirs play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance of their rainforest habitats by dispersing seeds and creating wallows that provide water for other animals. However, their populations have been drastically reduced due to habitat loss, poaching, and roadkill. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this handcolored engraving serve as a reminder of the beauty and importance of these endangered and vulnerable species, and the need for their conservation. It is a testament to the skill and artistry of the illustrator, Werner, and the engraver, Annedouche, and the dedication of Charles d'Orbigny to documenting the natural world.
