EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured steel engraving depicts the Common Corn-cockle, Agrostemma githago, also known as Githago segetum, Nielle des bles, and other regional names. The illustration was created by the skilled botanical artist Edouard Maubert and beautifully rendered in engraving by L. Lebrun. It is taken from the esteemed horticultural and agricultural publication "La Regne Vegetal: Planets Agricoles et Forestieres," published by Pierre Oscar Reveil, A. Dupuis, Fr. Gerard, and Francois Herincqs in Paris between 1864 and 1871. The Common Corn-cockle is a biennial or short-lived perennial herb that is native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. It is characterized by its rosette of lanceolate to ovate leaves, which are covered in soft, white hairs, and its tall, erect inflorescence bearing pink to purple flowers. The plant is a common weed in cornfields and other cultivated areas, and its seeds can be toxic to livestock if ingested in large quantities. Despite its weedy reputation, the Common Corn-cockle is an attractive plant with ornamental value. Its vibrant flowers add color to fields and meadows, and its delicate foliage is a favorite of many pollinators. The plant has also been used in traditional medicine, particularly for treating skin conditions and promoting wound healing. This exquisite botanical illustration captures the intricacies of the Common Corn-cockle's form and structure, providing a detailed record of this fascinating plant for generations to come.
