EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Common Yellow-banded Caecilian, Ichthyophis glutinosus, also known as the Ceylon Caecilian or Common Yellow-banded Worm-lizard. The illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy. The engraving was expertly executed by Corsi, with drawings by Jean Gabriel Pretre and direction by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Turpin, a French botanical illustrator of the 19th century, is renowned for his exceptional talent and meticulous attention to detail. The Common Yellow-banded Caecilian is a unique amphibian, characterized by its long, slender body and distinct yellow bands. This caecilian, or legless amphibian, is found in various parts of Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia. The illustration also features several other elements of interest. In the background, there are various plants, including Amaranthus cruentus (Red Amaranth) and Amaranthus paniculatus (Elephantfoot Amaranth), which were likely included to provide context and scale. Additionally, there are grains and a Mexican fruit, possibly a tomato or a chili pepper, suggesting a connection to food sources or potential uses of the caecilian. The intricacy and beauty of this hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving not only serve as a testament to the skill of the artists and engravers involved but also provide a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the Common Yellow-banded Caecilian and the botanical knowledge of the time.
