This image, taken from Jean Francois La Perouse's Voyage autour du monde (A Voyage Around the World), showcases the traditional costumes of a Tlingit chief and a youth from the Northwest Coast of America, specifically at Port des Francais in Lituya Bay, Alaska. The intricate details of their attire reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Tlingit Nation. The Tlingit chief, depicted on the left, is adorned with a grand headdress made of bear fur, feathers, and copper. The copper plate, a symbol of his rank and wealth, is affixed to the front of his headdress. He wears a long, flowing robe made of buckskin, adorned with intricate designs and fringes. In his right hand, he holds a ceremonial pipe, while a tomahawk is slung at his waist. The youth, on the right, wears a more simplified version of the chief's attire. He wears a buckskin shirt and leggings, decorated with geometric designs and fringes. A feathered headdress rests atop his head, and he holds a knife in his right hand. Both the chief and the youth are dressed in the traditional Tlingit style, which reflects their connection to the land and their reverence for nature. This beautiful copperplate engraving, hand-colored by Lazaretti, was created by Gaspard du Chene de Vancy and published in Giovanni Battista Sonzogno's Raccolta de Viaggi Piu Interessanti (Collection of the Most Interesting Voyages) between 1815 and 1817. It offers a rare glimpse into the traditional costumes and culture of the Tlingit people, preserving their history for future generations.
