EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Giovanni Antonio Sasso for Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World" published in Florence in 1847, offers a fascinating glimpse into the traditional costumes of the Gabr disciples, Armenians, and Kurds. The Gabr disciples, followers of Zoroastrianism in Iran, are depicted here in their distinctive attire as they gather in a Zurkhaneh, or gymnasium, for their ritualistic workout. The Gabr disciples' costumes consist of loose-fitting trousers, long-sleeved shirts, and colorful sashes. Some wear head coverings, while others go bare-headed. In their hands, they hold various props, including Indian clubs and meels, used for rhythmic exercises and wrestling bouts. The Armenian men, dressed in long, flowing robes and headdresses, are shown playing musical instruments, including drums and cymbals, adding to the lively atmosphere of the Zurkhaneh. The Kurds, wearing intricately patterned garments and headscarves, also participate in the workout, their strong, muscular physiques a testament to their dedication to this ancient tradition. The Zurkhaneh, a sacred place where men came together to worship, exercise, and socialize, was an essential aspect of Iranian and Persian culture for centuries. The Gabr disciples, Armenians, and Kurds, among other ethnic groups, all contributed to the rich tapestry of this unique and enduring tradition. This beautiful and historic illustration offers a rare and intriguing glimpse into the past, transporting us to a time when such communal gatherings played a central role in the daily lives of these diverse communities.
