EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the Count of Luxembourg, Comte de Luxembourg, a nobleman of the 15th century, clad in full armor and mounted on a powerful lion rampant. The Count is shown wearing the insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece, a prestigious and ancient chivalric order founded by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in 1430. The Order, represented by the fleur-de-lis and the golden fleece emblem, was known for its grandeur and exclusivity, with membership limited to European monarchs and high-ranking nobility. The Count's armor is intricately detailed, with a gilded helmet adorned with a crest featuring a lion and the cross of the Order. His coat of arms, displayed on his shield and on the lion's shield held in front of him, features a lion rampant, a common symbol of courage and strength in heraldry. The Count's attire includes a richly embroidered surcoat and a flowing cloak, adding to the grandeur of the image. This chromolithograph is taken from Loredan Larchey's Ancien Armorial Equestre de la Toison d'Or et de l'Europe au 15e Siecle (Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th century), published in Paris in 1890. The work is based on an illustrated manuscript from the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal, a renowned library in Paris. The meticulous attention to detail and vibrant colors of this chromolithograph make it a valuable historical record of the grandeur and splendor of the European nobility during the 15th century.
