EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, a seminal work in the field of entomology published between 1824 and 1839. Plate 110 showcases two intricately detailed Diptera species, Henops marginatus and Ogcodes gibbosus, also known as the Pale-margined Henops and the Gibbous Ogcodes, respectively. The Diptera order, commonly known as two-winged flies, is the largest order of insects, and these two species are both members of the family Lasiidae within the suborder Nematocera. Henops marginatus, the larger of the two flies, can be identified by its slender body, long legs, and distinctive pale margins on its wings. Ogcodes gibbosus, on the other hand, has a more robust appearance, with a rounder body and a prominent, bulbous structure on its thorax. Both flies are expertly depicted in their natural habitat, surrounded by various vegetation. The plant species featured in the image is Chrysosplenium oppositifolium, commonly known as Opposite-leaved Saxifrage. This attractive, low-growing plant is native to Europe, Asia, and North America, and is characterized by its opposite leaves and small, white or pink flowers. The Saxifrage family, to which Chrysosplenium belongs, is known for its diverse range of plant species, many of which are found in rocky environments. This stunning plate, featuring the meticulous illustrations of John Curtis, FLS, is a testament to the natural beauty and diversity of the insect world and the plants that support them. The intricate details and lifelike representations of these species provide valuable insights into the natural history of the 19th century.
