EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 246, featuring the Coleoptera species, Nosodendron fasciculare, commonly known as the Tufted Nosodendron. The intricately detailed print, published between 1824 and 1839, showcases the distinctive appearance of this non-indigenous beetle. The genus Nosodendron is not native to the British Isles, making this specimen an interesting addition to the collection. The Tufted Nosodendron can be found in various parts of Europe, Asia, and North America. It is characterized by its elongated, cylindrical body, covered in small, raised tubercles, and its distinctive tufts of setae (hair-like structures) on the elytra (wing cases). In this print, the Tufted Nosodendron is depicted in close proximity to the Centranthus calcitrapae, also known as the Portuguese Valerian or Calcitrapa Valerian. This plant, belonging to the Valerianaceae family, was commonly used in traditional medicine for its calming properties. The vibrant, purple-blue flowers of the Centranthus calcitrapae add a beautiful contrast to the muted tones of the beetle. The meticulous illustration was produced during the 1820s and 1830s, a time when the study of natural history was gaining significant momentum. John Curtis, FLS, the esteemed botanist and entomologist, oversaw the publication of this plate, which is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the scientific community during the 19th century. This print is a reminder of the rich history of natural history exploration and the intricate relationships between various species, showcasing the beauty and diversity of the natural world.
