EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, a seminal work in the field of entomology published between 1824 and 1839. Plate 343 showcases the intricately detailed illustration of Coleoptera, specifically Hydroporus davisii, also known as Oreodites davisi, or the Davisian Water-beetle. The beetle is depicted gracefully perched atop a stem of Utricularia minor, commonly referred to as Less Hooded Milfoil. The Davisian Water-beetle is a remarkable aquatic insect, characterized by its elongated, flat body, which allows it to skim the water's surface with ease. Its vibrant, metallic green exoskeleton shines in the light, making it a striking sight in its natural habitat. The beetle's long legs are adapted for swimming and walking on submerged vegetation. The Less Hooded Milfoil, a small, aquatic plant, is illustrated in the background of the plate. Its delicate, white flowers are arranged in dense, spherical clusters, and its leaves are submerged in water, with only the flowering stems extending above the surface. John Curtis, FLS, was a renowned English botanist and entomologist, who dedicated his career to the study and documentation of various species. This plate, along with the other 571 plates in the series, represents a significant contribution to the scientific understanding of insects during the 19th century. The intricate illustrations, produced with great care and attention to detail, continue to captivate and inspire researchers, naturalists, and enthusiasts alike.
