EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 532, featuring the Club-horned Sapyga, scientifically known as Sapyga clavicornis. The Hymenopteran insect is shown in intricate detail, with its distinctive club-shaped antennae and elongated hind legs, which give this species its common name. The Club-horned Sapyga is a solitary wasp, preying on aphids and other small insects. In the background of the print, a Mouse-ear Hawkweed plant (Hieracium pilosella, also known as Hieracium officinarum) is depicted. This low-growing, hairy plant is a common sight in Europe and Asia, and its small, yellow flowers bloom from June to September. The plant's leaves are covered in soft hairs, giving it a velvety texture and a distinctive mouse-ear appearance, hence its alternative common name. The Club-horned Sapyga and Mouse-ear Hawkweed were both meticulously documented in the 1820s and 1830s by renowned British naturalist John Curtis, FLS. Curtis's extensive work on entomology was published in several volumes, showcasing his remarkable skill in illustrating various insects, including this stunning example of the Club-horned Sapyga. This print, with its intricate details and beautiful composition, offers a glimpse into the natural world of the 19th century and the meticulous work of one of Britain's most celebrated naturalists.
