EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 572, featuring the Burdock Frog-hopper, Amblycephalus germari (now known as Evacanthus acminatus), in its natural habitat. The intricately detailed engraving, produced between 1824 and 1839, was created under the expert supervision of John Fleming and Edward Douglass Hooker, both esteemed naturalists of the time. The Burdock Frog-hopper is a small hemipteran insect, belonging to the suborder Ledipterans, which includes shield bugs, aphids, and frog-hoppers. This particular species is commonly found in Europe and Asia, and can be identified by its distinctive, elongated, and curved rostrum, as well as its bright green coloration. The Burdock plant (Arctium lappa) in the background is a common weed found throughout Europe and Asia. Its large, prickly leaves and burr-like seeds have made it a well-known plant in many parts of the world. The Burdock Frog-hopper is often found on the undersides of the leaves, where it feeds on the sap of the plant using its piercing-sucking mouthparts. This beautiful and historic print offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the 19th century, showcasing the meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy that characterized the work of John Curtis and his collaborators. The intricate engraving not only captures the essence of the Burdock Frog-hopper and its host plant but also serves as a testament to the enduring importance of natural history in understanding the complex web of life on our planet.
