EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite print showcases the elegant Odonata species, Cordulia curtisii, also known as Oxygastra curtisii, captured in its natural habitat in the 1820s or 1830s. The image is taken from John Curtis's seminal work, "British Entomology," specifically Plate 616, and was published between 1824 and 1839. The Odonata, commonly known as damselflies, are characterized by their slender bodies, long, delicate wings, and intricate patterns. In the foreground of the print, the Field Wood-rush, Luzula campestris, provides a lush backdrop to the damselfly. This plant, native to Europe and Asia, is a type of sedge with slender, grass-like leaves and small, greenish-brown flowers. The combination of the vibrant damselfly and the verdant wood-rush creates a stunning visual display of the natural world during the 19th century. John Curtis, FLS, was a prominent English botanist and entomologist who dedicated his life to the study and documentation of various plant and insect species. His meticulous work in "British Entomology" remains an essential resource for understanding the natural history of the British Isles. The intricate details of the damselfly's wings and body, as well as the delicate textures of the wood-rush, are beautifully rendered in this print. The artist's skillful use of shading and contrast adds depth and dimension to the image, making it a captivating representation of the natural world during the 1800s.
