EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 65, featuring the Stephensian Hylotoma, scientifically known as Hylotoma (Arge) pagana subspecies stephensii. The Hylotoma stephensii, also known as the Stephens' Hylotoma or Stephens' Blister Beetle, is a vibrant and intricately patterned insect belonging to the family Meloidae, order Hymenoptera. This particular species is named after the naturalist and explorer, Stephenson Percy Smith, who first discovered it in the late 1820s or early 1830s. The Stephensian Hylotoma is shown in close proximity to the Hedge Wound-wort plant, Stachys sylvatica. This low-growing herbaceous plant is native to Europe and is characterized by its square stems, lanceolate leaves, and purple or pink flowers. The Hedge Wound-wort is known for its medicinal properties, particularly for treating wounds and bruises. This beautiful entomological plate was produced during the 1820s and 1830s by the renowned British naturalist, John Curtis, FLS. Curtis's British Entomology is an extensive and meticulously detailed work, showcasing a wide range of insects, including beetles, butterflies, and other invertebrates. This particular plate, with its stunning illustration of the Stephensian Hylotoma and the Hedge Wound-wort, offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the 19th century.
