EDITORS COMMENTS
This print is a beautiful example of the intricate detail and scientific accuracy found in the works of John Curtis's "British Entomology." The image, Plate 714 from the series, features the Coleoptera species Anthicus tibialis, now known as Anthicus instabilis, and the plant Oxyria digyna, also referred to as Rumex digynus or Mountain Sorrel. Dated between 1824 and 1839, this plate is a testament to the meticulous work of Curtis and his team during the 19th century. The Coleoptera, or beetles, are the largest order of insects, and the Anthicini tribe, to which Anthicus belongs, is a diverse group characterized by their elongated antennae and flattened bodies. The Anthicus instabilis, with its distinctive yellowish-brown elytra (wing cases) and black legs, is a common species found in Europe and Asia. The accompanying plant, Oxyria digyna, is a low-growing perennial that thrives in damp, nutrient-poor soils. Its distinctive heart-shaped leaves, with their bright red stalks and small, white flowers, make it a striking addition to wetland habitats. This exquisite print is a treasure trove of natural history information, showcasing the delicate balance between insect and plant life during the 1820s and 1830s. The intricate illustrations, combined with detailed annotations, provide a valuable record of the natural world during this period, offering insights into the rich biodiversity of the British Isles and beyond.
