EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the Dark Green Fritillary, Argynnis aglaia, also known as the Charlotte Butterfly or Papilio charlotta. The image is taken from The British Miscellany, or Coloured Figures of New, Rare, or Little Known Animal Subjects, published in London in 1804. The work was produced by renowned natural history illustrator James Sowerby, who meticulously captured the intricate details of this striking butterfly. The Dark Green Fritillary is a variant of the more commonly known Red-margined Fritillary. This butterfly is characterized by its dark green wings, which are speckled with small white dots and black lines. The underside of the wings displays orange patches with black borders, and the body is adorned with black and orange markings. The Dark Green Fritillary is native to Europe and Asia, and can be found in wooded areas and meadows. It is known to feed on various flowers, including violets and thistles. The species is named after Charlotte, possibly in honor of Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who was the wife of King George III of the United Kingdom at the time. This beautiful engraving is a testament to the natural history illustration techniques of the early 19th century. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the Dark Green Fritillary to life, providing a glimpse into the natural world of over two centuries ago.
