EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored engraving, created by Sebin after an illustration by Oudart for Charles d'Orbigny's Universal Dictionary of Natural History published in Paris in 1849, showcases two remarkable beetles from the Eastern Hemisphere: the Eastern Hercules Beetle (Dynastes tityus, also known as Scarabaeus hyllus) and the Jewel Scarab (Chrysina macropus, also known as Chrysophora macropa). The Eastern Hercules Beetle is the largest extant beetle species, with males reaching up to 17 centimeters in length. They are named for their impressive horns, which can be up to 10 centimeters long. The Jewel Scarab, on the other hand, is a smaller beetle, measuring only about 3 centimeters in length. Both species are native to tropical regions of Africa and are known for their iridescent exoskeletons, which provide excellent camouflage in their forest habitats. The Eastern Hercules Beetle is a powerful flyer, while the Jewel Scarab is a burrowing species. This exquisite engraving, produced during the 19th century by renowned publishers Fournier and Blanchard, showcases the intricate details of these fascinating insects and highlights their natural beauty. The use of handcoloring adds an additional layer of artistry to the already impressive illustration.
