EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts a pair of Eastern Wood Pewees (Contopus virens) in their nest, taken from an illustration by Edwin Sheppard for Thomas George Gentry's seminal work "Nests and Eggs of the Birds of the United States," published by J.A. Wagenseller in Philadelphia in 1881. The Eastern Wood Pewee is a small, agile flycatcher native to North America, with distinctive stripes on its breast and a bold, black eye stripe. In this image, the male and female are shown side by side, their plumage a vibrant contrast against the dappled greens and browns of their nest. The nest, intricately woven from twigs, grasses, and other plant material, is suspended in a tree, with a single egg visible at the bottom. The Eastern Wood Pewee is a solitary bird, typically found in wooded areas, and is known for its distinctive call, a series of clear, ringing notes that sound like the word "pee-wee." This beautiful and intricate illustration offers a glimpse into the natural history of this fascinating bird species, and serves as a reminder of the rich ornithological heritage of the United States.
