EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Andrea Bernieri for Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Antique and Modern of All Peoples" published in Florence in 1843, showcases three distinct representations of Egyptian deities: the Sphinx, Canopus, and a Greek-style statue of various Egyptian gods. The central figure is the enigmatic Sphinx, an iconic symbol of ancient Egyptian culture and mythology. With the body of a lion and the head of a human or a god, the Sphinx embodies the power and wisdom of the desert. The hieroglyphs inscribed on its body, including the ankh, symbol of life, and the hieroglyph for "Egypt," emphasize its Egyptian origins. To the left, the god Canopus, the deity of the Nile and the underworld, is depicted covered in hieroglyphs. The hieroglyphs on his body represent the Nile River, symbolizing his connection to the life-giving waters. Canopus was also believed to protect sailors and fishermen, making him an essential deity for those living near the Nile. The Greek-style statue on the right represents a collection of various Egyptian gods, including Osiris, Isis, and Anubis. The gods are depicted in the classical Greek style, reflecting the influence of Greek culture on the interpretation and representation of Egyptian deities during the 19th century. The hieroglyphs and inscriptions on the statue further emphasize the connection between the Egyptian gods and their ancient culture.
