Eire becomes a republic - March-past of the Irish Army

Troops giving Eyes left to President O Kelly as they passed down O Connel Street in the big, military parade on Independence Day. Mr. O Kelly stood on a canopied dais between the pillars of the General Post Office, scene of some of the bitterest fighting during the 1916 Rebellion. A huge map showing all Ireland as one unit hung between the columns of the Post Office, and the columns were also draped with laurel wreaths.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the momentous occasion of Ireland's transition from a dominion to a republic on Independence Day, 1949. In the heart of Dublin, on O'Connell Street, a grand military parade took place as the Irish Army paid homage to their new President, Éamon de Valera O'Kelly. The President, dressed in military uniform, stood proudly on a canopied dais between the pillars of the iconic General Post Office. The building, a symbol of Irish history and a site of some of the most intense fighting during the 1916 Easter Rising, was adorned with a large map of Ireland as a single entity, hung between its columns. The columns themselves were draped with laurel wreaths, adding to the solemnity and significance of the day. The soldiers, with fixed gazes and eyes left, marched past the President in a show of loyalty and unity, marking a new chapter in Irish history. This image, captured by the Illustrated London News Ltd, is a testament to the pride and determination of the Irish people as they embraced their new republican status.
