EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, titled "Elevation and Floor Plan of a House in Pompeii," offers a unique glimpse into the intricacies of ancient Roman domestic architecture as depicted in the ruins of Pompeii. The image, created by J.G. Bach based on an illustration by Emile Presuhn from his "Les Plus Belles Peintures de Pompei" (The Most Beautiful Paintings of Pompeii), published in Leipzig in 1881, showcases the various elements of a typical Pompeian domus, or house. The elevation view on the left reveals the exterior facade of the house, featuring an atrium (open courtyard) with an impluvium (rainwater collection pool) at its center. The atrium is surrounded by an ala (side wing), which houses an officina (workshop), a cella atriensis (cellar), and an ostium (entrance). The taberna (shop) is located at the far end of the ala. The floor plan on the right provides a detailed layout of the interior spaces. The central room is the atrium, which is surrounded by an exedra (semi-circular recess), a tablinum (reception room), and a peristylium (colonnaded garden). The peristylium opens up to a viridarium (garden), which features a piscina (pool) and an apotheca (storage room). The triclinium (dining room) and cubiculum (bedroom) are located off the peristylium, while the bibliotheca (library) is situated near the tablinum. This illustration offers a fascinating insight into the complex design and organization of the Pompeian houses, which were built around an open central courtyard and featured various private and public spaces for daily life and social gatherings.
