EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837, showcases two captivating species of Lepidoptera, the Eudoxus charaxes butterfly and the Western nightfighter. The Eudoxus charaxes butterfly, also known as the Mechow's Charaxes, is depicted in both its upper side (1) and under side (4). The upper side displays the vibrant orange and black wings, while the under side reveals the intricate patterns of the hindwings. This butterfly is native to Africa and is known for its large size and distinctive markings. The Western nightfighter, composed of the Artitropa comus, Hesperia helops, and Ennius species, is depicted in its dorsal (2) and ventral (3) forms. The dorsal side reveals the striking orange and black wings, while the ventral side displays the cryptic brown and white pattern, which provides excellent camouflage against predators. This moth is native to the Americas and is known for its ability to fly fast and low to evade predators. The intricate details and vibrant colours of these handcoloured lithographs are a testament to the skill and artistry of the time. Westwood's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology was a groundbreaking work that brought the wonders of the natural world to a wider audience, inspiring awe and fascination for generations to come.
