EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured steel engraving depicts the European Ash Tree, Fraxinus excelsior, also known as Frene, in all its botanical glory. The intricately detailed illustration was created by Edouard Maubert and expertly engraved by Oudet, under the direction of Pierre Oscar Reveil and published as part of the comprehensive work "La Regne Vegetal: Planets Agricoles et Forestieres" by A. Dupuis, Fr. Gerard, and Francois Herincq, published by L. Guerin in Paris between 1864 and 1871. The European Ash Tree is a majestic and iconic species native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. It is characterized by its distinctive pinnate leaves, which are composed of 5 to 11 leaflets, and its tall, straight trunk that can reach heights of up to 35 meters. The tree is renowned for its beauty, with its attractive bark that exfoliates in thin, curling ribbons, and its vibrant autumn colours. The European Ash Tree has played an essential role in European culture and history. Its wood has been used for various purposes, including tool handles, furniture, and charcoal production. The tree is also an important habitat for various insects, birds, and mammals, making it a vital component of European forests and ecosystems. This stunning handcoloured steel engraving is a testament to the meticulous botanical illustration techniques of the 19th century, capturing the European Ash Tree's beauty and importance in exquisite detail.
