EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving showcases the European Peacock Butterfly, Aglais io, a stunning insect native to Europe. The image is taken from Jussieus Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, a comprehensive Dictionary of Natural Sciences published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The European Peacock Butterfly is easily recognizable by its vibrant orange, black, and white wings, which resemble the eyespots of the peacock. The intricate details of the butterfly's wings are beautifully captured in this engraving, with each tiny scale meticulously rendered. The plate also includes several other natural subjects, reflecting the encyclopedic scope of the work. Among them are the Spined Stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, a small edible fish native to the Atlantic coasts of Europe and North America; the Atlantic Mackerel, Scomber scombrus, a common fish in the North Atlantic; and the Piccola Spinarella, or Small Spined Loach, Gasterosteus spinarella, a small fish found in European freshwaters. The plate also features various plants, fruits, and vegetables, as well as a few fish from the ichthyological realm. The historical significance of this work lies in its meticulous attention to detail and its role as a record of natural knowledge in the 19th century. The engraving process, which involved creating a series of tiny dots to create shading and texture, was a labor-intensive and highly skilled craft. The resulting images were prized for their beauty and accuracy, making them valuable tools for scientific research and education.
