EDITORS COMMENTS
Evangeline: A Tender Reunion, by Frances Brundage (1914), is a poignant depiction of a scene from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem, "Evangeline," first published in 1847. The poem tells the heart-wrenching story of the separation of Evangeline and her beloved Gabriel during the expulsion of the Acadian community from Nova Scotia by the British in the mid-18th century. In this print, we see Evangeline, dressed in the traditional Acadian costume, standing in a quiet, contemplative moment as she gazes upon the grave of her long-lost love, Gabriel. The sun sets behind her, casting a warm, golden glow over the scene, suggesting the passage of time and the inevitability of change. Evangeline's search for Gabriel had been in vain, but upon his death, she found solace in the Sisters of Mercy, becoming one of them herself. The print captures the bittersweet moment of their reunion, as Evangeline's love for Gabriel endures even in death. Frances Brundage's beautiful and evocative illustration brings to life the emotional depth and timeless themes of Longfellow's classic poem. The print is a testament to the power of love and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
