EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving, created by du Casse and Fries after an illustration by Adolph Fries, showcases two distinctive domestic sheep breeds: the Fat-tailed Sheep (Ovis aries 1) and the Merino Sheep (Ovis aries 2). The Fat-tailed Sheep, also known as Mouton a grosse queue, is a breed native to the Middle East and North Africa. Its most notable feature is the long, curved, and pendulous tail, which can weigh up to 15 pounds. The Fat-tailed breed is well-adapted to arid environments and is prized for its high-quality wool and meat. In contrast, the Merino Sheep (Mouton merinos), depicted in the background, is a European breed that originated in Spain. Merinos are renowned for their fine, soft, and lustrous wool, which is highly sought after for producing high-quality textiles. The breed was named after the Merino region in Spain, where it was first discovered. The intricately detailed engraving, taken from Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, provides an exquisite representation of these two fascinating sheep breeds. The meticulous craftsmanship of the engraving not only showcases the animals' physical attributes but also captures their unique personalities and the essence of their respective origins.
