"This lithograph by Karl Joseph Brodtmann, published in Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals in 1836, showcases an intriguing assembly of four distinct species of large mammals from various regions of the world. At the center stands the Yak (Bos grunniens), a large bovid native to the high-altitude steppes of the Himalayas and Central Asia. Known for their long, curved horns and shaggy coat, yaks are an important source of food, milk, and transportation for local communities. They are currently listed as vulnerable due to habitat loss and poaching. To the left, a Musk Ox (Ovibos moschatus) can be seen. This large, hoofed mammal is native to the Arctic regions of Canada, Greenland, and Alaska. Musk oxen are characterized by their thick, woolly coat and large, curved horns. They were once hunted to near extinction but have since made a remarkable recovery. In the foreground, the extinct Wild Barbary Sheep (Ovis longipes palaeoaegyptiacus) is depicted. This species of sheep was native to the Sahara Desert and was known for its long, spiraled horns and distinctive white markings. Unfortunately, they went extinct in the late 19th century due to overhunting and habitat loss. To the right, a Red Sheep (Ovis aries) is shown. Red sheep, also known as European sheep or Racka sheep, are native to Europe and are characterized by their reddish-brown coat and curved horns. They are an important source of meat, milk, and wool for humans and are widely distributed throughout Europe and Asia."
