EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled "Fleet Street, London in 1842," is a masterpiece by the renowned English artist Thomas Shotter Boys. The scene depicts a bustling Fleet Street, looking west towards Temple Bar, which at that time was situated at St. Paul's. The photograph is taken from Boys' book, "London As It Is," a collection of twenty-six coloured lithographs showcasing contemporary scenes of London during the 19th century. The left side of the image reveals the Mitre Tavern, a historic public house that has long been a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Its red-brick facade, with a sign bearing the image of a mitre, adds a touch of charm and tradition to the urban landscape. On the right side of the image, the imposing structure of St. Dunstan-in-the-West church stands proudly. Its Gothic architecture, with intricate stone carvings and pointed arches, contrasts sharply with the modern buildings and Victorian carriages that fill the rest of the scene. The street itself is a hive of activity, with horse-drawn carriages and pedestrians jostling for space. The narrow cobblestone streets, lined with shops and houses, are a testament to the vibrant and bustling nature of Victorian London. Boys' ability to capture the essence of London life in the mid-1800s is truly remarkable. His use of color and detail in this lithograph brings the past to life, transporting us back in time to experience the sights, sounds, and energy of 19th-century Fleet Street.
