EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph, taken from the new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology published by Bohn in London in 1837, showcases an intriguing assemblage of flies, wasps, and a dauber. The first three species depicted are the Mydas fly, Mydas clavatus (1), horsefly, Tabanus americanus (2, 3), each with their distinct features. The Mydas fly is characterized by its large, bulbous eyes and long, slender legs, while the horseflies are identified by their large size, robust body, and elongated palps. Next, we have the digger wasp, Sphex jamaicensis (4), and two different species of scoliid wasps, Scolia fossulana (5) and Scolia sp. (not visible). The digger wasp is known for its distinctive, elongated ovipositor, which it uses to lay its eggs in the burrows of other insects. Scoliid wasps are recognized for their slender bodies and long, slender legs, as well as their bright, metallic colors. The black and yellow mud dauber, Sceliphron caementarium, is represented by both its imago (6) and cocoon (7), as well as the imago taken out of its cocoon (8). This wasp is known for constructing its nests using mud and paralyzing spiders to serve as food for its developing offspring. The cocoon stage is crucial for the wasp's development, as it undergoes metamorphosis within the protective casing. This exquisite lithograph not only demonstrates the intricacies of these fascinating insects but also showcases the remarkable artistry of the time. It is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, as documented by the meticulous work of John O. Westwood and Dru Drury.
