EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the Forest Giant Owl Butterfly, Caligo eurilochus, in both its upper and underside forms. The Forest Giant Owl Butterfly is a remarkable species of butterfly native to the forests of Surinam, South America. Known for its impressive size, with a wingspan reaching up to 20 cm, this butterfly is a true natural wonder. The upper side of the butterfly, depicted in the left half of the image, displays its striking resemblance to an owl's face, with large, round eyespots and intricate patterns that mimic the facial features of the nocturnal bird. This camouflage helps protect the butterfly from predators. On the right half of the image, the underside of the butterfly is revealed, showcasing its vibrant colors and unique patterns. The underside is a stunning contrast to the cryptic upper side, with bright orange and black wings adorned with intricate patterns, providing excellent camouflage against the forest floor. This beautiful illustration is taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar, Germany, in 1802. The encyclopedic work aimed to educate children about the natural world, and the high-quality copperplate engravings, like this one, were an essential part of the learning experience. The hand-coloring adds an extra layer of detail and beauty to the illustrations, making them visually captivating and educational.
