EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Fossils of Extinct Coral," is an exquisite illustration from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Sciences," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi, drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre, and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The intricately detailed image showcases several extinct coral species, including the Chenendopora fungiformis (1), Chrysaora damaecornis (2), a sponge, Eudea clavata (3), Lochmaeosmilia radiata (4), tabulate coral, and Favosites alcyon (5). The Chenendopora fungiformis, also known as Crisaora corno di Daino, is depicted in the upper left corner, while the Chrysaora damaecornis, or the double-collared sunbird coral, is illustrated in the upper right. The Eudea clavata, Eunomia radiata, Favosite Alcione, and other coral species are displayed in the lower half of the image. Turpin, born in 1775, is considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century. His meticulous attention to detail and commitment to scientific accuracy are evident in this stunning illustration. The hand-coloring adds an additional layer of beauty and depth to the already intricate engraving. This illustration is not only a testament to the artistic and scientific achievements of the time but also a reminder of the rich history of botany and the natural world. The various coral species depicted in this image provide a glimpse into the diverse marine ecosystems that once existed and offer a fascinating insight into the natural history of our planet.
