EDITORS COMMENTS
Francis I, King of France (1494-1547), also known as "Le Roi-Soleil" or "The Sun King," is depicted in this stunning chromolithograph from Loredan Larchey's Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th Century. The print, which dates back to 1890, is a beautiful representation of the king in his regal attire, wearing the insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece, an elite and prestigious chivalric order to which Francis belonged. Francis I ascended to the throne of France in 1515, following the death of his father, King Louis XII. He was a patron of the arts, literature, and science, and his court was a center of Renaissance culture. This is reflected in the intricate details of his clothing and the elegant design of the print. The background of the print features a landscape with a castle and a river, symbolizing the power and grandeur of the French monarchy. The king is shown on horseback, holding a scepter in one hand and a globe in the other, signifying his dominion over his kingdom and the world. The image is a testament to the power and wealth of the French monarchy during the Renaissance period. The Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th Century is a valuable historical resource, providing a visual record of the coats of arms and insignia of the members of the Order of the Golden Fleece, as well as other European nobility of the time. This particular print of Francis I, King of France, is a striking example of the high-quality reproductions produced by Loredan Larchey and the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal.
