EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving, created by Fournier after an illustration by Susemihl for Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Universal Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris in 1849, showcases two intriguing and distinctly marked members of the canid family: the Golden Jackal (Canis aureus) and the Striped Hyena (Hyaena hyaena). The Golden Jackal, with its golden-yellowish coat and black-tipped ears, gazes intently at the viewer with a curious expression. Known for its adaptability and wide distribution across Europe, Asia, and North Africa, this agile omnivore is a versatile hunter and scavenger, often living in groups and feeding on a variety of prey and vegetation. In contrast, the Striped Hyena (Hyaena hyaena), with its unique coat of brownish-yellow stripes, is shown in a more defensive posture, displaying its teeth and raised hackles. Native to Africa, this social scavenger is known for its distinctive and powerful laughing vocalizations, which can be heard from miles away. The Striped Hyena's diet consists mainly of carrion, but it is also an opportunistic hunter and will feed on live prey when available. Both animals were meticulously observed and documented by naturalists of the time, and their inclusion in this detailed and accurate illustration serves as a testament to the scientific curiosity and artistic skill of the era. The intricate handcoloring adds depth and vibrancy to the engraving, making it a stunning addition to any natural history collection.
