EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving, created by du Casse and Adolph Fries for the "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases an enchanting assemblage of four distinct hummingbird species and their nests. At the center of the image, the Green-crowned Plovercrest (Stephanoxis lalandi) graces our sight with its vibrant plumage, featuring a striking green crown and a ruby-red throat. To its left, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) displays its brilliant red throat and emerald-green back. On the right, the Ruby-topaz Hummingbird (Chrysolampis mosquitus), also known as the Ruby-throated Mango, boasts a resplendent ruby-red chest and a golden-yellow belly. The intricately detailed engraving not only highlights the birds' stunning appearances but also captures the essence of their nests. The Green-crowned Plovercrest's nest is a delicate cup made of plant fibers, while the Ruby-throated Hummingbird's nest is a compact, spherical structure with a concealed entrance. The Ruby-topaz Hummingbird's nest, however, is a more substantial cup made of plant material and spider silk, which is suspended from a tree branch. This image, titled "Oiseau mouche de Delalande, petit rubis, rubis topaze" in French, invites us to appreciate the beauty and diversity of these remarkable creatures and their habitats. The meticulous hand-coloring adds depth and richness to the engraving, making it a true masterpiece of natural history art.
