Ruby Throated Hummingbird Collection

The Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) is a small, brightly colored bird found in North America, and is the only species of hummingbird that breeds east of the Mississippi River. The adult male has a bright red throat, while the female and juvenile have white throats with some speckling. These birds feed on nectar from flowers and also eat insects for protein, and are able to hover in midair while feeding and can fly backwards as well as forwards. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is an important pollinator for many plants, helping to spread pollen from flower to flower. They build their nests out of plant material such as mosses, lichens, spider webs, and downy feathers. These birds are active during the day but rest at night in trees or shrubs near their nesting sites. With its vibrant colors and unique behavior, this species makes an interesting addition to any backyard wildlife habitat.
