EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases a Himalayan black bear, Ursus thibetanus laniger, in its natural habitat as depicted in the Gardens of the Zoological Society during the early 19th century. The bear is expertly rendered in handcoloured copperplate engraving by W. Symns, based on an illustration by Horace S. Smith. This engraving was created for William Smellie's translation of Count Georges Buffon's seminal work, "History of the Earth and Animated Nature," published by Thomas Kelly in London in 1829. The Himalayan black bear, also known as the Thibet bear or brown arctos bear, is a subspecies of the Asiatic black bear, native to the mountainous regions of the Himalayas and southern China. Known for their distinctive shaggy coat and powerful build, these bears are well-adapted to their rugged environment. In this enchanting scene, a zookeeper stands nearby, observing the bear with a sense of wonder and respect. The bear appears calm and curious, its eyes fixed on the observer, as it munches on a clump of bamboo shoots. The lush greenery and intricate details of the bear's coat are beautifully captured in the handcoloured engraving, making for a striking and evocative image that transports us back in time to the natural wonders of the Zoological Society's gardens.
