EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Hispaniolan Emerald, Chlorostilbon swainsonii, also known as Swainson's Hummingbird or Trochilus swainsonii. The image is taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Ornithology, specifically the volume dedicated to Hummingbirds, published in Edinburgh by W.H. Lizars in 1833. The Hispaniolan Emerald is a small, vibrant hummingbird native to the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. The male is characterized by its iridescent emerald-green plumage, with a forked tail and long, slender bill. The female, on the other hand, is less colorful, with a duller green back and a white belly. The engraving captures the bird in flight, its wings outstretched and its tail feathers fanned out. The artist has meticulously detailed the intricate patterns on the bird's feathers, making it a stunning work of art as well as an accurate representation of this beautiful species. Sir William Jardine was a Scottish naturalist and explorer who traveled extensively throughout the world, collecting specimens and documenting new discoveries. His Naturalist's Library was one of the most comprehensive works of its time, featuring high-quality illustrations of a wide range of animals from around the globe. The Hummingbirds volume, in particular, showcases the beauty and diversity of these fascinating birds, many of which were newly discovered during the 19th century. This hand-colored steel engraving is a testament to the skill and artistry of the time, and a reminder of the importance of documenting the natural world for future generations.
