EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured steel engraving depicts the majestic Hogweed or Cow Parsnip, Heracleum sphondylium, also known as "berce branc-ursine" in French. The botanical illustration was created by Edouard Maubert and the engraving was executed by Oudet, for the esteemed publication "La Regne Vegetal: Planetes Agricoles et Forestieres" by Pierre Oscar Reveil, A. Dupuis, Fr. Gerard and Francois Herincqs in Paris between 1864 and 1871. The Hogweed or Cow Parsnip is a large herbaceous perennial plant that can grow up to 2 meters tall. Its distinctive features include its large, compound umbels of white flowers, which bloom in late spring and early summer. The plant is native to Europe, Asia, and North America, and is commonly found in damp meadows, forests, and along roadsides. The common name "Hogweed" comes from the plant's use as a fodder for pigs, while "Cow Parsnip" refers to its resemblance to the edible parsnip. However, all parts of the plant are toxic to humans if ingested, and can cause skin irritation and photodermatitis. Despite its potential hazards, the Hogweed or Cow Parsnip is an important plant in many ecosystems, providing food and shelter for various insects and wildlife. Its large, showy flowers are a beloved sight in the spring and summer, and its sturdy stalks and leaves add texture and interest to the landscape. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving is a testament to the artistry and scientific precision of the botanical illustrators and engravers of the 19th century, and a reminder of the beauty and diversity of the natural world.
