EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the enchanting Homalomena occulta, also known as Calla occulta. Created by George Cooke, this masterpiece is based on an original observation by George Loddiges and was published in Conrad Loddiges' Botanical Cabinet in Hackney, London, in 1817. The Homalomena occulta, a native of tropical South America, is a stunning epiphyte with distinctive, arrow-shaped leaves that are often tinged with red at their bases. The plant's most notable feature, however, is its unusual inflorescence. Hidden beneath the leaves, the flowers bloom in a striking, white, calla lily-like spathe and spadix, which emerges only when the plant is ready to reproduce. This intricately detailed illustration, produced using traditional copperplate engraving techniques, highlights the plant's elegant form and delicate beauty. The meticulous application of hand-coloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, bringing the Homalomena occulta to life. George Cooke, a skilled engraver, expertly captured the essence of this plant, creating an enduring record of its appearance for generations to appreciate. This botanical illustration, a testament to the artistry and scientific curiosity of the time, remains a valuable resource for horticulturists, botanists, and plant enthusiasts alike.
