EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image, published in The Graphic on October 19, 1918, captures the moment of triumph and determination in the eyes of Indian airman, Subedar Hardit Singh Malik, as he takes to the skies during the First World War. The caption beneath the photograph reads, "An Indian Airman of the Royal Flying Corps. Subedar Hardit Singh Malik, of the 13th Sikh Regiment, who has been transferred to the R.F.C., is seen here making his first solo flight at Upavon, Wiltshire." The First World War marked a significant turning point in the history of the Indian military, with thousands of Indian soldiers and airmen serving in various capacities to support the British war effort. The Indian contingent in the air service saw an increase in numbers, with many Indians, like Malik, demonstrating exceptional bravery and skill in the skies. Malik, a Sikh from the 13th Sikh Regiment, was one of the many Indians who answered the call to serve in the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). The RFC and RNAS merged in April 1918 to form the Royal Air Force (RAF), making Malik one of the early Indian airmen in the newly formed RAF. The photograph of Malik making his first solo flight is a testament to the courage and resilience of the Indian soldiers and airmen who served during the war. Their contributions to the war effort were invaluable, and their stories continue to inspire and remind us of the rich and complex history of the Indian military during the First World War.
